Base44 vs Lovable: Which AI App Builder Should You Pay For in 2026?

Short answer
Base44 is quicker to a working app in the third-party tests we found, and it bundles hosting and a database. That backend stays on Base44, and unused credits expire each month. Lovable starts at $25 a month against about $20, syncs code to GitHub on every plan, and rolls credits over. Choose Base44 for internal tools, Lovable for anything you may need to move.

Both tools pass the first test. You type a sentence describing an expense tracker, and a few minutes later there’s a login screen, a form and a dashboard. That part works on Base44 and on Lovable, and it’s why both have grown so fast.
The question that decides which one to pay for comes later. It comes the day a client asks whether the app can run on their own servers. Or the day you run out of credits with a demo on Friday. Or the day the project gets big enough that you want a developer to take over. The two products answer those days very differently, and neither company’s homepage tells you how.
Nearly every comparison ranking for this search is written by a company that sells a third builder or a development service, and ends by recommending it. We sell neither. Here is what the pricing pages, the documentation and 2,648 public reviews say.
How we researched this
This is a research guide, not a hands-on test. We didn’t build on either platform. Prices and rules come from each company’s pricing page and documentation, checked on October 1, 2026 and rechecked on October 2. Where we cite a build test, it was run by someone else, and we name them and their date. Ratings are from Trustpilot on October 1.
We earn nothing from Base44 or Lovable. Every link to either company on this page is a plain link. That’s worth saying because for some readers below, Base44 is the right answer.

Which one gets you to a working app faster?
Base44, according to the two timed tests we found. Neither is ours, so weigh them as two people’s experience. In March 2026 the agency Till Freitag gave both tools one prompt for a CRM dashboard and reported about 10 minutes on Base44 against about 15 on Lovable. In September 2026 ClickIT built the same expense-approval workflow on both free plans. Lovable paused about a minute in to offer three interface directions. Base44 kept building without asking.
Those two behaviors describe the products well. Base44 decides for you and hands over something that runs, including sign-in and a database. Lovable stops to ask what you want it to look like. Till Freitag and the design-tool maker Banani both rated Lovable’s interface as the more polished result, and Banani found Base44’s notes app had more working features on the first pass, such as richer search.
If your goal is an internal tool that five colleagues will use on Monday, speed to working software is what you’re buying. If the app is going in front of customers, the extra minutes on Lovable buy you a say in how it looks.
Base44’s free plan gives 25 message credits a month, 5 a day. That’s enough to run the same one-sentence test on your own idea. We earn nothing from this link.
Time your own idea on Base44 FreeHow much does each one really cost?
Base44’s entry plan is about $20 a month and Lovable’s is $25. Both include 100 credits, and both companies publish example costs that land in the same range: about half a credit for a small visual change and 1 to 2 for a feature. So a credit buys roughly the same amount of building on each. The real difference is in three rules around the credits.
| Size of change | Base44 example | Lovable example |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Simple text or visual change: about 0.5 | Make a button grey: 0.50 |
| Medium | Improve a small feature: about 1 | Remove a footer: 0.90 |
| Larger | Add a complex module: about 2 | Add authentication: 1.20 |
| Largest | App-wide change: about 3 to 4 | Landing page with images: 2.00 |
| Talking without building | Discuss mode: 0.3 a message | Plan mode: 1 a message |
| Price of one credit, entry plan | about $0.20 | $0.25, or $0.30 as a top-up |
First, leftovers. Base44’s unused credits expire at the end of every cycle. (One exception: upgrade from one monthly plan to a bigger one and your unused credits carry over for one more cycle.) Lovable’s roll over while you stay subscribed and last two months on monthly billing. Second, refills. Base44’s credits page lists two options when you run out, waiting or upgrading, and its billing docs mention credit top-ups without a price. Lovable sells top-ups at $15 per 50 credits on Pro, valid for a year. Third, daily credits. Lovable adds 5 build credits a day on Pro that vanish if unused, so someone who builds daily gets up to about 150 more a month.
Hosting cuts the other way. Base44 charges no credits for hosting or for reading and writing your database, and it gives a second, separate allowance for what your users trigger. Lovable announced on June 13, 2026 that building, hosting and in-app AI are paid from one credit balance, a change it is rolling out gradually. Each month it grants 20 Cloud credits and 4 AI credits, which Lovable calls a temporary offering. Past that, a live app spends the same credits you build with.
Lovable says most small or new apps never get past that grant. The catch is what happens at zero: its docs say the published site stays up, but AI features stop and the built-in database, storage and sign-in pause shortly after. On Base44, database reads and writes never touch your credits.
What that means in practice
A Trustpilot reviewer wrote on September 16, 2026 that Lovable’s cloud usage was eating their build credits, so keeping a project running drained the allowance. On Base44 the equivalent surprise is an app with an AI feature emptying the integration meter. Our Base44 pricing guide works through that with numbers.
Who owns the code and the backend?
You own the code on both. What differs is whether the thing you own can run anywhere else. Base44’s pricing page says “Nothing is locked to the platform”, and its terms give you ownership of the generated code. Its documentation is narrower. GitHub sync needs the Builder plan. The eject command copies your frontend, schemas and functions into a new project whose backend still runs on Base44, with an empty database. We found no documented way to move a Base44 backend or database to another host.

Lovable syncs code to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket on every plan, including the free one, and lets paid plans download the project as a ZIP file. Its backend, Lovable Cloud, is built on Supabase’s open-source foundation, and you can connect your own Supabase project instead. Cloud’s settings include a data export. ClickIT, reading the same documentation, notes that moving off Lovable Cloud still takes manual work. It’s a documented path, though, and Base44’s docs don’t describe one.
This matters less than agencies selling migration services suggest, and more than Base44’s pricing page suggests. If the app is a three-month experiment, portability is a cost you may never pay. If a paying client will depend on it for years, ask now what happens when they want to leave. Till Freitag, an agency, says it doesn’t deliver client work on Base44 for this reason.
Lovable’s free plan includes Git sync, so you can test the part that matters most here: connect a repository on day one and watch your code land in it. We earn nothing from this link.

Lovable is rated far higher. On October 1, 2026, Trustpilot showed Lovable at 4.2 out of 5 from 1,752 reviews and Base44 at 2.8 from 896. The gap is widest at the bottom: 53% of Base44’s reviewers gave one star, against 17% of Lovable’s.

Base44’s September 2026 complaints are mostly about money and access: a plan cancelled after a failed charge, billing that continued after cancelling, credits gone mid-build with no refund, and two reviewers who said their accounts were disabled. Base44 replied to one that deactivations follow detected violations of its terms and invited a review. Its five-star reviews come from non-technical users who say they built a professional site easily.
Lovable’s praise reads the same way, with one agency user reporting fast delivery of polished apps for clients. Its complaints are about credits disappearing: on cancellation, on cloud usage, and in one case after paying twice. A three-star Lovable reviewer made a criticism that applies to both products. It worked well early, they said, then looped on bugs as the project grew, and they moved to conventional coding tools.
Read low scores with care. Unhappy customers post far more often than satisfied ones. A gap this wide between two similar products on the same site is still worth something.
When should you pick Base44?
- The app is an internal tool or a prototype, and nobody will ask to host it elsewhere.
- You want sign-in, database and hosting to exist without any decisions from you.
- Your app sends a lot of email or handles many files. Base44’s separate integration allowance covers that without touching your build credits.
- You build a steady amount every month, so expiring credits cost you little.
When should you pick Lovable?
- A client, an investor or a future developer may need the code and the database somewhere else.
- You build in bursts. Rollover and $15 top-ups mean a heavy month doesn’t force a plan change.
- How the app looks matters to the people who will use it.
- You work with a team. Lovable doesn’t charge per seat.

Both tools share the same weak point, in their own users’ words: they’re quick at the start and harder to steer as the app grows. If you need real server-side code, a store-ready mobile app or logic too involved for a prompt, a different kind of builder will suit you better. We compared eight of them, with prices and public ratings, in Base44 alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base44 owned by Wix?
Yes. Wix announced the acquisition of Base44 on June 18, 2025, for about $80 million plus earn-out payments through 2029. Base44’s Terms of Service now name Wix.com Ltd. as the contracting company. Wix reported that Base44 reached about $150 million in annual recurring revenue as of May 2026.
Can you export a Base44 app?
Partly. Two-way GitHub sync, available from the Builder plan, exports the app’s code. Base44’s eject command copies the frontend, schemas and functions into a new project, but that project’s backend still runs on Base44 and starts with an empty database. Base44’s documentation describes no way to move the backend or database to another host.
Is Lovable free?
Lovable has a free plan with 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month, plus monthly grants of 20 Cloud credits and 4 AI credits. Git sync works on the free plan. Custom domains, downloading the code as a ZIP file and removing the Lovable badge all need a paid plan, which starts at $25 a month.
Do credits roll over on Base44 or Lovable?
On Lovable, yes: unused monthly credits roll over while you stay subscribed and expire two months after issue on monthly billing. On Base44, mostly no: its documentation and Terms of Service say unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. The one exception is an upgrade from one monthly plan to a bigger monthly plan, which carries unused credits over for one more cycle. Lovable sells top-ups at $15 per 50 credits on the Pro plan; Base44’s billing docs mention top-ups but publish no price.
Which is cheaper for one app, Base44 or Lovable?
Base44’s entry plan is about $20 a month and Lovable’s is $25, each with 100 credits. Base44 never charges credits for hosting or database use. Lovable pays for hosting from the same balance once a 20-credit monthly grant runs out. It says most small apps stay inside that grant, but if the balance hits zero, its built-in database, storage and sign-in pause.
