Short answer

Get the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro with lifetime AI if you want automatic bird ID, live view and no yearly bill: Birdfy’s store had it at $239.99 on October 3, 2026, and that’s your two-year cost. Get the Birdbuddy 2 (now sold as Birdbuddy Home) for sharper, curated photos, but plan on Premium: $199 plus $69.99 a year makes $338.98.

How we researched this

This is a research guide, not a hands-on test: we haven’t used either feeder. Plan prices and features come from Birdbuddy’s and Birdfy’s help centers, Birdfy’s store, both apps’ US App Store listings and Birdbuddy’s launch announcement, checked on October 3, 2026. Birdbuddy’s web store blocked our automated check that day, so we use its $199 launch price. How the AI performs comes from named reviewers at Wirecutter, MacRumors and Digital Camera World, plus owners on Reddit, credited where we use them. The two-year cost table is our own arithmetic. Which is better, Bird Buddy or Birdfy?

For most people buying in late 2026, Birdfy is the better deal and Bird Buddy is the nicer camera experience. The Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro’s lifetime AI names every visitor without a plan, while Birdbuddy has spent 2026 moving automatic ID behind its Premium membership and, according to newer owners quoting its support team, live viewing too. Bird Buddy still takes cleaner, more selective photos, and its older Birdbuddy Pro was the most accurate identifier in Wirecutter’s testing, which hadn’t covered the Birdbuddy 2 as of its June 2026 update.

  • Pick the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro if you want to see every bird that lands, don’t want another subscription, and can live with an app that sends a lot of notifications and makes some ID mistakes.
  • Pick the Birdbuddy 2 if you care most about photos you’d actually frame, like a calmer feed of highlights, and are fine with roughly $70 a year for Premium.

How much do Bird Buddy and Birdfy cost over two years?

Over two years, a Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro with lifetime AI costs $239.99 at Birdfy’s October 3 store price, with nothing more to pay for bird ID. If you end up with the subscription-AI version instead, Birdfy’s new membership puts unlimited ID in Plus, which makes it $399.97. A Birdbuddy 2 costs $199 on the free plan, $338.98 with yearly Premium and $390.76 if you pay Premium monthly. The cheapest Bird Buddy setup is also the one that has lost the most features in 2026.

Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro plus two years of Plus, needed for unlimited ID on the subscription-AI version: $399.97.
Two-year cost by setup, from makers’ prices and plan prices checked October 3, 2026. Birdbuddy 2 uses its $199 launch MSRP; Birdfy’s no-plan bars assume the lifetime AI version.

How we got there: Birdbuddy announced the Birdbuddy 2 at $199.1 Its US App Store listing prices Individual Premium at $69.99 a year or $7.99 a month and Family Premium at $89.99 a year.2 Birdfy’s store listed the Feeder 2 Pro at $239.99, down from $319.99. The product data behind Birdfy’s store marks this model’s AI as Lifetime, though the page itself doesn’t spell it out, so look for “AI Lifetime Free” before you pay.3 A year of Plus costs $79.99 on Birdfy’s store.6 Birdfy also gives each active Lifetime AI service a one-time 70% discount on a Plus or Pro membership, which would bring the Plus row down to $343.98 for a lifetime AI unit.5

Is there a monthly fee with Bird Buddy?

There’s no required fee, but Birdbuddy’s Premium membership now holds most of what made the feeder feel smart. On the US App Store, Individual Premium costs $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year, Family costs $89.99 a year or $9.99 a month, and a feeder-free Bird ID Pass costs $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year.2 The same listing still shows an older $59.99 annual plan, which likely explains why you’ll see both $60 and $70 quoted around the web. Wirecutter quotes $8 a month or $70 a year.9

Per Birdbuddy’s plan table, Premium adds:

  • Automatic AI+ recognition on every postcard. Free accounts get it only when they tap a postcard to analyze it.4, 10
  • 2K Ultra resolution, plus Name That Bird for tracking individual regulars and an ignored-species list.4
  • Unlimited Nature Chat, the AI bird Q&A (free accounts get one prompt a day), along with beta features, a bird health feature, Alexa integration and 20% off new Birdbuddy products.4
  • Family Premium extends all of that to your guests and adds guest access to the live stream.4

Can you use a Bird Buddy without a subscription?

Yes, but the free plan is thinner than it was a year ago. Free owners still get automatic photo and video postcards, HD and 2K video, frenzy mode for busy feeders, downloads, pet alerts and up to 10 guests who receive postcards.4 Two 2026 changes matter more than that list, though.

  • Species ID now takes a tap. Birdbuddy’s help center says users without Premium receive “Unrecognized” postcards that they can identify by tapping “Identify this visitor.”10 Owners on r/BirdBuddy noticed the switch in late May 2026; some called it a downgrade, while one said the manual check leaves fewer wrong guesses than the old automatic ID.11
  • Live view may require Premium. The plan table marks free live streaming with an asterisk: access “can depend on when you started using the app.”4 In September 2026, several new owners on r/BirdBuddy said the app asked them to pay to watch, and one quoted Birdbuddy support saying that for newer members, features “including live viewing” are now part of Premium.12

If live view is the reason you’re buying, assume you’ll pay for Premium. Birdbuddy offers 90-day, no-questions-asked returns on feeders ordered from Birdbuddy, which gives you room to find out.13

Does Birdfy charge for AI bird ID?

Not if you buy a lifetime AI version. Birdfy sells two kinds of feeders: “AI Lifetime Free,” which needs no activation or payments, and “AI by Subscription,” which comes with a 7-day trial.3 Birdfy’s store data marks the Feeder 2 Pro’s AI as Lifetime and the cheaper single-lens Feeder 2 as By Subscription, but neither product page says so in plain text.3, 14 On Amazon, the Feeder 2 Pro comes in an “AI Permanent Service” version and an “AI 7 Day Trial” version, so check which one is in your cart. MacRumors found the lifetime versions cost around $20 more and called that worthwhile.15

If you end up with a subscription version, Birdfy’s newer account-based membership sets the rules:

  • Free: 10 AI identifications a day, 30-day cloud retention, 20-second clips and 5 GB of saved Collection storage.5
  • Plus: unlimited ID on up to two devices, 60-day retention, 30-second clips, 20 GB, Bird Data stats, an AI bird chat called Joy and 15% off Birdfy products. Birdfy’s store sells a year for $79.99, while its help center uses $69.99 a year (billed through Stripe) as its reference price, so check both before you pay.5, 6, 16
  • Pro: unlimited ID on up to 10 devices, 90-day retention, 60-second clips and 100 GB for $149.99 a year; extra devices are $1.99 each a month.5, 7

Birdfy says Lifetime AI keeps working as before and doesn’t need migrating, and it’s phasing out the older per-device AI subscriptions.5 Buying AI after the fact costs more: Birdfy’s iPhone app still listed a Bird Recognition Lifetime Plan at $99.99 and an annual plan at $57.99 on October 3; Wirecutter notes app prices run higher than buying online.9, 17

Which identifies birds more accurately, Bird Buddy or Birdfy?

Bird Buddy, in the one test that put both brands side by side, though it also records fewer visits. In Wirecutter’s June 2026 testing, Rachel Cericola ran 15 random visits from each feeder through Cornell’s Merlin Bird ID app; the older Birdbuddy Pro’s identification was the most accurate of the group, while the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro’s two cameras “just meant more mislabeled birds.” Wirecutter hadn’t tested the Birdbuddy 2 at that point.9 Neither is right every time, and both let you correct a wrong ID.

  • Birdfy, counted: MacRumors’ Juli Clover, testing the Birdfy Feeder and Feeder 2 Duo on the same app, logged 47 visits on the day she wrote her review, some with more than one bird. Of those birds, the app named 38 correctly, marked 14 unknown and misnamed 2, calling a house finch a canyon towhee. The day before, 12 of 73 visits went unidentified. Her verdict: right much more often than wrong.15
  • Birdfy owners: one r/Birdfy owner said the AI has lately been settling for a vague “Bird?” label when a bird sits too close to the lens,18 and one owner of a Birdfy Bamboo estimated its AI was wrong 5 to 10% of the time.19
  • Birdbuddy 2: Digital Camera World’s Lauren Scott found its ID correct every time, though only 4 or 5 species visited during her test, and postcards took a few days to start.20 The Birdbuddy Home also listens: tap the sound-wave icon on a postcard and Sound ID checks its audio for birds singing out of frame.21
  • Missed visits: Wirecutter set up a security camera and found the Birdbuddy Pro skipped a substantial number of visits. Birdbuddy told Wirecutter that’s intentional, since its AI filters out poor shots.9 Birdfy records every motion event, which is why it catches more birds and sends far more alerts.9, 15

Wirecutter says Birdbuddy can identify about 13,000 species; Birdfy says 6,000+.3, 9 For backyard feeders, the count matters less than how the AI handles your regulars at odd angles.

How do the Birdbuddy 2 and Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro cameras compare?

The Birdbuddy 2 has one rotating camera with a wide 135-degree view, while the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro uses two lenses: a 1080p wide angle for the whole scene and a 2K close-up lens that tracks the bird.1, 3

Reviewers flagged real-world quirks on both. When Digital Camera World reviewed the Birdbuddy 2 in May, 2K and slow motion were still greyed out pending a firmware update, live view often took 20 seconds or more to load, and the shallow tray could crop birds in landscape mode. The solar roof, though, kept the battery at 100% for two weeks of grey UK weather.20 Birdbuddy now lists 2K among the free video settings.4 On the Birdfy side, Wirecutter found the Feeder 2 Pro’s 1.25-liter seed bin “constantly clogged,”9 and an owner of a two-lens Birdfy feeder on r/Birdfy said the square 2K close-ups often crop off birds’ heads.24

Is Birdbuddy Home the same as Birdbuddy 2?

It appears to be the same feeder under a new name. Birdbuddy announced the Birdbuddy 2 at CES on January 5, 2026, with a 135-degree view, dual solar panels, dual-band Wi-Fi and a bigger seed bin.1 Birdbuddy’s help center now calls its newest camera module Birdbuddy Home and lists the same hardware: 135-degree view, 6-cup hopper, 3,900 mAh battery, IP67 rating, dual-band Wi-Fi and a camera you rotate for portrait or landscape.8, 25 Digital Camera World’s Birdbuddy 2 spec sheet lists the same 3,900 mAh battery, 6-cup hopper, IP67 rating and dual-band Wi-Fi, though its weight and dimensions differ slightly from the help center’s.20 Wirecutter’s June 2026 update linked “Birdbuddy 2” to the same help-center article that is now titled Birdbuddy Home Specifications.9 Amazon sells it as Birdbuddy Home.

The help center also lists a compact Birdbuddy Nook with a 3.8-cup hopper, 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi and an optional solar roof.26 That lines up with the $129 Birdbuddy 2 Mini from the same CES launch.1 Older Birdbuddy Pro feeders are still around; the Home’s main upgrades over the Pro are faster wake-up, a wider view, the built-in solar roof, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and lower-latency live view.25

Are Bird Buddy and Birdfy squirrel-proof?

No. Neither feeder is designed to stop squirrels, and both can be chewed. Birdbuddy’s own advice is to add a squirrel baffle on the pole or above the feeder.27 Birdfy’s add-on shield doesn’t help here: Birdfy says it’s for the original Feeder 1, not the Feeder 2 series, and doesn’t keep out squirrels.28 Owner reviews on Birdfy’s own Feeder 2 Pro page describe squirrels pulling the solar cable loose and gnawing the plastic housing.3 Wirecutter’s advice applies to both: use a baffle or spicy seed.9

What do these cameras record and share?

Birdfy feeders record anything that moves in front of the camera, people and cars included, and label non-animal clips “Motion,” according to Wirecutter and MacRumors.9, 15 Birdfy’s parent company, Netvue, encrypts video in transit, and Wirecutter reports cloud storage itself isn’t encrypted, though Netvue says the data is secured through its cloud platform. Birdfy records location to improve species ID. Birdbuddy collects only non-precise location data, which may be shared with third-party processors for its AI services. Neither app offered two-factor sign-in when Wirecutter checked.9 Birdbuddy says the Home camera switches fully off when you take it out of the feeder.25 Aim either one at your own yard and away from a neighbor’s windows.

Which smart bird feeder makes a better gift?

The Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro with lifetime AI is the easier gift, because there’s nothing to renew. A Bird Buddy can be a lovely present, but set it up knowing who pays for Premium.

  • Watch for a bundled trial. Bird Buddy orders can include a Premium trial, and one gift buyer on r/BirdBuddy said they were charged about $98 for a renewal they thought was already included.29 Cancel or switch plans at least 48 hours before renewal if you bought on Birdbuddy’s web store; App Store and Google Play purchases are canceled there.30
  • Birdfy’s 7-day Plus trial doesn’t auto-renew, Birdfy says, so the recipient won’t get a surprise bill.16
  • Check the Wi-Fi first. Both feeders need a solid signal where they’ll hang, and the Birdbuddy 2’s 5 GHz support only helps if the router reaches that far.8, 9 Birdfy’s Feeder 2 series connects only on 2.4 GHz.23
  • Deals have dates. Birdfy’s store already had the Feeder 2 Pro at $239.99, $80 off, on October 3, 2026.3 If you’re waiting for Black Friday (November 27) or Cyber Monday (November 30), use that as the price to beat.

Subscription creep isn’t unique to bird feeders. We ran the same two-year math on AI voice recorders, where several makers sell minutes by the year, and on Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 vs Gen 2, where Meta’s new Meta One subscription doesn’t add anything to the glasses yet. If the gift is for a traveler instead, AirPods Live Translation costs nothing extra, and our best translation earbuds guide flags which models charge for minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a monthly fee with Bird Buddy?

There’s no required fee, but most new owners will want Premium. Birdbuddy’s US App Store listing prices Individual Premium at $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year and Family Premium at $89.99 a year (October 2026). Without it, species ID is a manual tap, and newer members may lose live viewing.

Can I use my Bird Buddy without a subscription?

Yes. The free plan still sends photo and video postcards, records HD and 2K video, lets you download and share clips, and invites up to 10 guests. But free accounts tap to identify each visitor, and newer owners on Reddit say Birdbuddy support told them in September 2026 that live viewing now needs Premium.

Does Birdfy charge for AI bird identification?

Not if you buy a lifetime AI version, like the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro sold as “AI Permanent Service” on Amazon. Versions without it get 10 free AI identifications a day under Birdfy’s membership. Unlimited ID then needs Plus, which Birdfy’s store sells for $79.99 a year, or Pro at $149.99 a year.

Is Birdbuddy Home the same as Birdbuddy 2?

It appears to be. Birdbuddy launched the Birdbuddy 2 at CES in January 2026, and its help center now documents a Birdbuddy Home with the same hardware: a 135-degree view, 6-cup hopper, 3,900 mAh battery, dual solar roof and dual-band Wi-Fi. Amazon lists the feeder as Birdbuddy Home, too.

Which smart bird feeder identifies birds most accurately?

In Wirecutter’s test, which checked 15 random visits per feeder against Cornell’s Merlin app, the older Birdbuddy Pro was the most accurate, while the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro mislabeled more birds. MacRumors found Birdfy right more often than wrong: across 47 visits in a day, some with several birds, it named 38 correctly, got 2 wrong and marked 14 unknown.

Does the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro have a microSD card slot?

No. Birdfy says the Feeder 2 series only supports cloud storage. Clips stay in the cloud for free for 30 days, and you can keep favorites in a 5 GB Collection. Plus stretches that to 60 days and 20 GB, and Pro to 90 days and 100 GB.

Is Bird Buddy worth the money?

It’s worth it if you love sharp, curated postcards and a polished app and you’re fine paying for Premium, which brings the two-year cost to $338.98. If you’d rather see every visit, get automatic ID and skip the yearly bill, the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro with lifetime AI costs less.

Can family members watch my feeder’s live stream?

With Bird Buddy, guests see postcards for free, but guest access to the live stream comes with Family Premium, listed at $89.99 a year on the US App Store. Birdfy lets you share a feeder with an unlimited number of accounts, and shared guests can watch the live feed and recorded clips.
